Our most frequently asked question is how much does PAT testing cost? This guide will show you what to expect to pay for PAT Testing. PAT Testing prices will depend on the type organisation you are and obviously how many appliances you have.
The definition of an appliance is any electrical item that is plugged into the mains supply whether that be via a standard 3 pin UK plug. Ceeform plugs which is used in the events & construction industry will also need to be PAT tested.

Making sure you get the amount of items correct is vital to make sure you don’t get an unexpected bill afterwards. For example, each computer usually has four appliances – hence why you could get your numbers wrong quick easily!

The word “portable” from PAT testing throws some clients out – as the item doesn’t necessarily have to be portable to be tested. Large appliances such as fixed machinery or large format printers will still need to PAT tested.
Most PAT Testing companies charge a set amount for the first 20-50 items. It is essentially a “call out charge” so your starting price may be the same whether you have 10 items or 40.
For us, it’s just the first 20 items are a set price, and then you are priced per item after 20.
A few companies do not charge to PAT test during out of usual business hours to avoid disruption to your business, staff & customers. It’s far quicker to PAT test an organisation where the PAT test engineer doesn’t have to wait for staff to switch off computers etc.
So take advantage of that when you can as it will be far less disruptive for you. If the website doesn’t clearly state if they do out of hours testing, ask them – as they most probably would prefer this option themselves.

PAT Testing Repairs
Most companies do not usually charge for small repairs. These sorts of repairs include:

- Damaged/Broken Cable Repair
- Loose Terminals

PAT Testing Prices Explained
The price of your testing will depend on the number of items you have and also the type of environment you’re in. Organisations such as schools & offices are a lot quicker for a PAT test engineer to test than an industrial site. A competent PAT tester could test double the amount of items in a school, compared to testing a factory. So the price per item tends to reflect this within most PAT Testing companies.
To give a broad rule of thumb expect to pay anything from £1-£2 per item.
